Get your Rio on

If you’ve been following the Olympics over the last few days, you know Canada’s doing better than most of us thought we’d do. All the more reason to whip up a bit of extra national pride.

That’s why we’re showing the games in the Manulife Centre atrium. Instead of cheering at your desk, stop by Manulife Centre on your lunch and be part of a cheering section.

Even better are the conversations you’ll have with strangers about sports you don’t know but become an expert in every four years. Did she break her form during her third dive? Was the dressage as artistic as it could have been?

And our course, while you’re here in the Manulife Centre, you can pick up a few things to get you into the Olympic spirit.

Cachaça at the LCBO:

This is Brazilian rum, and the root ingredient of Brazil’s most famous cocktail, the Caipirinha. Here’s one of our favourite recipes, courtesy of Jamie Oliver:

  • 5 limes
  • 12 tablespoons golden caster sugar
  • 2 cm fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated
  • 1 kg ice cubes, crushed
  • 70 cl Cachaça
  • 1 small bunch fresh mint, leaves picked

Cut the limes into wedges, squeeze the juice into a large jug, then toss in the wedges. Add the sugar and ginger then bash it up to get the flavours going. Half fill the jug with crushed ice and bash again. Then add the Cachaça, stir, taste and add more sugar you want. Top the jug up with mint leaves and enjoy!

Maple syrup at the Bloorstreet Market:

Here’s a new Canadian tradition: do a shot of syrup every time we medal.

A gym membership at GoodLife:

It’s easy to get inspired by the physical specimens on the screen. Should that inspiration translate into action, our GoodLife location is one of the best in town. Great instructors and trainers, flexible classes, a spin studio and even a pool if you want something more than what’s up on 51.

But first, the games. There’s still time to enjoy them with friends and neighbours in the atrium. So come on over, meet some people and show your pride.

Go Canada Go!

#BloorAndBetter Birthdays

When it comes to birthday gifts, is it better to give or receive?

We’d argue that giving wins every time because of the double-shot of dopamine you get: once from the person’s elated face when they see what you got them, and again because of the winning feeling you get when you see that beaming smile.

Manulife Centre is full of perfect birthday gifts. There’s Birks for a bit of sparkle, Bonny Satchels n’ Duffles for a surprise vacation (they’ll think it’s just a suitcase until they open it and find the tickets) and the LCBO for that Vintage bottle of something special.

We’re also full of birthday cards for every kind of birthday boy or girl. Here are some tips to help you match the card to the personality:

The Comedian

Have a friend who’s always making you laugh? Choose a bold, brash card that returns the favour. At More Than Words… you’ll LOL your way through a slew of inappropriate jokes about age, states of undress and edgy takes on real life.

They normally put their best on the shelves outside the front doors, but for the R-rated cards you’ll have to head inside. And while you’re there, check out the kitsch table to the right of the cash desk by the window for that little something to complete your gift idea.

The Traditionalist

This person remembers when the Rogers Centre was SkyDome, when stores were closed on Sundays and when coffee was coffee. The perfect card for them has a simple, familiar birthday message. You can find cards to celebrate a Happy 50th right up to a Happy 90th at PharmaPlus — conveniently located on the Concourse level right next to the LCBO.

The Romantic

Heartfelt bordering on sappy wins every time with these folks, and you’ll find all kinds of tear-jerkers at Indigo. Alternatively, you can pick up a blank card and write your own amorous sonnet. Need some inspiration? The poetry section’s on the lower level of the store.

The Adventurer
For these people, you have to go all out and create your own card because you know it’s what they’d do for you. The Printing House can help you design a one-of-a kind pop-up card or even a 3D selfie. Awesome!

Next time you find (or make) the perfect card at Manulife Centre, snap a pic and share it on our Instagram feed @ManulifeCentre. We’d love to see it!

Prepping for the Pride Parade

Love & acceptance. Unity & celebration. Rainbows & more rainbows. Pride is Toronto’s best party of the year, and for the first time ever, this year’s celebration is a month-long affair.

Manulife, our parent company, is thrilled to be a sponsor of the event, and being steps from the action, Manulife Centre is your go-to shopping destination for everything you’ll need at Pride Month’s crowning event: the July 3rd parade.

If you’re driving down, our parking lot is conveniently located just down the street from the Gay Village. And don’t forget that you’ll get two hours of free parking with a $25 purchase at Manulife Centre, like a stylish satchel from Bonny for all the parade swag, new sunnies from HGB Eyewear or pre-parade munchies from Best One Convenience Store on the concourse level by the bank machine.

Hydrate & caffeinate

If the past two weeks are any indication, it’s going to be a scorcher on parade day. Pick up a S’well water bottle at Indigo. They come in awesome colours like Grapefruit Linen, Teakwood and Pink Champagne Glitter — all perfect for Pride.

And if you tied one on the night before (maybe at The One Eighty where you can see the fun from 51 floors up), perhaps an iced coffee from Starbucks or Timothy’s would serve you well? Alternatively, you can stop by the Bloor Street Diner for an espresso served with Toronto’s best Sunday brunch.

Protection & (ahem) protection

Sunscreen’s a must. It just is. You’ll find mobile EMS units all over the parade route to treat burns, but you’re best to avoid the discomfort altogether with a quick trip to Pharma Plus for a tube of SPF 80 and whatever else you think you may need.

We’ll be here all weekend spreading the love, so come by for a free snow cone and get into the spirit. Happy Pride and Happy Canada Day from all of us at Manulife and Manulife Centre!

Dads + Cars = : )

After a year off, the Yorkville Exotic Car Show is back for Father’s Day on June 19th — and really, is there a better way to walk off brunch with Dad than along an actual red carpet lined with magnificent cars? The answer is no, there isn’t.

And it doesn’t really matter whether or not your pop is into cars, because you don’t have to be a gearhead to appreciate these gorgeous machines shimmering in the sun.

You’ll get an up-close look at the latest from Acura, Ferrari, Lotus and Lamborghini — to name a few — as well as classic Porsches, Mustangs and Studebakers. And of course, you’ll see the history of the Corvette. We’re partial to the bulbous years from the 1970s.

We were there the last time this event ran back in 2014, and we had such a great time that we’re a Gold Sponsor this year. That means there’ll be two cars parked right by our doors. We’re hoping for Lambos, but if it winds up being a pair of BMWs, that would be fine too. Or the Batmobile. No really. It’s coming.

Thinking of checking it out? Remember that you’ll get two hours of free parking at Bay & Bloor with a $25 purchase at Manulife Centre. There’s the Bloor Street Diner brunch you could have. There’s Bay Bloor Radio where you can take your dad HiFi shopping (check out the new wireless headphones). There’s Indigo where you can get the big guy a few car mags to complete the experience. And especially for this event, there’ll be free snow cones from 1–4 pm here on the concourse level.

If your dad’s also a granddad, bring the little ones along! Because there’s nothing like the look on a kid’s face when he gets his first ever glimpse at a Testarosa.
